What Would They Think?

1adfc2_f9669561be1c4e6eb50db02e1197149e-mv2_d_1250_1250_s_2Over the last month or so, though it feels already like it’s been an eternity, that we have dealt with this new President, many have found self care in television and books. We watch them in an effort to take our minds off of things, and to transport us to a better more ideal world, yet as I watch some of my favorite shows, most of them political in nature, I can’t help but wonder what these characters might think of this current political situation we now find ourselves in.

Once again on the precipice of losing everything we hold dear. On the one hand, television provides an escape, and occasionally it provides a voice to the voiceless masses. Some show themes ring eternal. Rewatching Queer as Folk for the umpteenth time, I’m reminded of how dark the Bush years were to those involved. Some of the thoughts of the characters ring just as true now as they did then. It’s a tragic thought when you think about it. That so much should change and yet we find ourselves about to move ever backwards. For a brief shining moment we had marriage equality, yet I fear with everything else it will find itself on the chopping block soon.

It’s interesting to think of how some of our favorite characters might react, or what they’d have to say about what’s going on. I can’t help but want to hear sage words of advice from Albus Dumbledore at this particular moment about the situation we currently find ourselves in. While I am always proud to see those in privilege using it to the advantage of the many (like at the Screen Actors Guild awards) I can’t help but worry that it’s going to take a lot more than just celebrities to turn this tide around.
