Music Monday: The Britney Single

MISCLike most children of the 90’s, I grew up listening to Britney Spears in her early career, and at the time I was a fairly big fan, though I would never go so far as to call myself a super fan. (Not like I am with say, Madonna). For me there were a number of songs that I didn’t really care for, and then, there was this last album which for me was unlistenable. While mostly it was praised for being her most honest album, as someone who had grown up with pop hit after pop hit, I couldn’t help but be disappointed that there was really nothing I could dance to (every singer seems to have one of these albums). So when I saw that the internet was losing their collective minds because Britney had released a new single I was shall we say, cautiously optimistic.

I will say it’s not necessarily the pop hit I had hoped for right off the bat, it’s slightly more of a ballad, not necessarily the sort of thing one would expect to hear at a club.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good song, but after the tepid response to her last album (or at least that I felt) I was hoping for something more along the lines of like Toxic or Circus or even Gimme More which was of course the comeback song of all comeback songs in my opinion. Blackout was an amazing comeback album, and I think Britney needs that again. That said, there’s been an interesting trend I’ve seen as of late with artists releasing singles that would otherwise set the tone for the album, except they’re sometimes nowhere on the album (Bitch Better Have my Money on Anti?) or they just feel sort of out of step for what the album eventually becomes. It’s hard to say whether or not this will be the case here, but I will say this, I look forward to Britney’s new album, and your move Gaga*.

*Yes I am the rare person who loves both Madonna and Gaga.
